Concert Halls and Retail Design Brighton

Santiago Calatrava designed the Auditorio de Tenerife – the main concert hall of Tenerife, which is the capital city of the Canary Islands.   The building is distinctive in that it has a shell-like wing of reinforced concrete which  touches the ground at only two points, which informs many Brighton architects on concepts for architectural design.

Yet another good example that Brighton architects refer to is the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, which is one of the most prestigious buildings by Californian architect Frank Gehry.  The outside is almost exclusively framed in stainless steel, which is formed like the sails.  The interior is then constructed in a contrasting Vineyard style, where the audience surround the stage. Gehry also designed the dramatic array of pipes rising from the organ so that they complement the exterior of the building.

The Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal, which has been designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas is quite unique among concert halls in that it contains two walls made entirely of glass.  Nicolai Ouroussoff, the architecture critic from the New York Times, wrote of the building: “The building’s chiseled concrete form, resting on a carpet of polished stone, suggests a bomb about to explode”. He declared that because of the originality it was one of the most impressive concert halls to be built in the last 100 years.

Retail Design Brighton

The interior of the Copenhagen Opera House by Henning Larsen (2005) has an oak floor and maple walls to enhance hat acoustics. The royal box of the Queen, usually placed in the back, is next to stage.  Retail design in Brighton has much to learn from such an approach.

The Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee in the US, designed by by architects David M. Schwarz & Earl Swensson, is a fine example of Neo-Classical architecture that has borrowed quite shamelessly from the Roman and Greek models. It complements yet another Nashville landmark which is a full-size replica of the Parthenon.

Paris

The Philharmonie de Paris , designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel was opened in 2015.  This concert hall is located at La Villette,  the park at the edge of Paris that is dominated by museums, a music school and other buildings of great cultural significance.  The outside  of the building is modelled on a glittering irregular cliff that is cut by horizontal exposing an upward ramp.  The outside is then clad with thousands of small pieces of aluminium, of three shades, from white to grey through to black. A path then follows the ramp to the top of building up to a terrace with a dramatic view of the city, providing a wide view of the area.  The hall, similar to the Disney Hall in Los Angeles, has a Vineyard style of seating, with the audience placed to surround the main stage.  That said, the seating can also be re-arranged in different styles depending what type of music is being performed.  When it opened, the architectural critic of the UK newspaper, the Guardian compared it to a space ship crash-landed on the outskirts of the city.

Germany

The Elbphilharmonie concert hall is located in Hamburg, Germany. Designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, the building was inaugurated in January, 2017 and is the tallest inhabited building in the city, standing at a height of 110 meters.  This glass concert hall seats 2100 in Vineyard style and is situated on top of what was a warehouse.
